Slow cooker dog food recipe
Today I’m sharing my favorite slow cooker dog food recipe for your furry friend. I don’t usually do recipes of this type but when I find something this good I just have to share! I’m sure many of you are probably thinking why in the world would I want to make my own dog food. I have a million other things to do and that just adds another to the list. Trust me I know but hear me out. The truth is dog food can get expensive! especially if you have a picky dog like we do.
We got our mini golden doodle, JoJo, this past April. She is the sweetest little thing. JoJo came into our big family of 5 small kids. Ethan and Emma were just turning 2 at the time. Well, they loved their new friend and they started sneaking her treats as soon as we got her. We tried to stop this but I couldn’t watch them all every second. We quickly found out JOJO’s favorite snack was cheese puffs. Sigh. Not the best thing for our new pup.
So from the beginning, we struggled to get her to eat regular dog food because of course, she wanted the good stuff! Table food only! We tried so many different kinds of dog food before we found something shed actually eat. What we found she liked was canned dog food. That canned food cost $1.00 a meal! That was getting costly. So that’s when I decided to do some research on making your own dog food. We gave it shot and it worked! we had to try a few different recipes before we found one she really loved! But we have now been making this recipe for a few months and our little Jojo loves it. Plus it’s so much cheaper and healthier than buying the can dog food.
We make one large batch in the crock pot a week for under $15.00! You just can not beat that and its honestly no work. Just throw it all in the crock pot and go.
slow cooker dog food recipe
- 2-3 lbs boneless chicken breast
- 1 sweet potato cubed
- 3 cups frozen green beans
- 3 cups frozen peas
- 1-2 medium apple cored and cubed
- 1 can of kidney beans drained and rinsed
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
Put your chicken in your crock pot first. Pour in a little water, enough to cover the chicken. I’d say about 2 cups but use your own judgment.
Now just dump in your slow cooker the sweet potatoes, green beans, peas apple, kidney beans, and olive oil.
Cook on low for 8 hours or high 4-6.
When done cooking, drain off excess liquid. You can put into individual ziplock baggies or just 1 large container. you can store in the fridge for up to one week or place in the freezer and thaw out prior to feeding your pup.
This will last us 1-2 weeks easily. I just make more as I need to and Jojo loves it! We also add in a multivitamin make sure she is getting all the nutrients she needs.
Always check with your vet to make sure this recipe is a good fit for your dog.
I wanted to show you JoJo’s new food/water bowls. How cute are these? Love them. I wanted to get a picture of Jojo eating for you but she wouldn’t sit still long enough.
Hope your furry friend loves this recipe as much as my sweet girl.
